Maybe Next Time

There’s someone knocking on my door
But I didn’t plan on having guests —
My face is unwashed, the floor is a mess,
And I’m still not properly dressed.
Perhaps my neighbor’s run out of sugar;
I hear she sips a lot of tea.
But the market’s just around the corner,
And now the knocking has since ceased.
Maybe next time I will open it.

There’s someone knocking on my door
But I’m too comfortable on the couch.
Munchin’ on snacks, got a bottle of Jack,
And just enough from last night’s takeout.
It could be the shoes I ordered online
And they can be left on the floor.
Perhaps I should check to ease my mind,
But now the knocking is no more.
Maybe next time I will open it.

There’s someone knocking on my door
But I’m in the middle of a book.
The suspense is building, my heart racing,
And now they’ve got me way too hooked.
I am curious, though, to who it could be;
I wish they would call out and say.
I’ll check once I’m done with the chapter I’m on,
But now the knocking has gone away.
Maybe next time I will open it.

There’s someone knocking on my door
But I’m about to take a nap —
Curtains drawn closed, pillow under head,
Blanket sprawled over my lap.
I know the drill, I’ve done this before,
I’ve got my eyes on the clock.
There’s someone knocking on my door,
Now I’ll wait for the knocking to stop.
And next time I will open it.

I’ve finished my nap and made my bed,
My floor is no longer a mess.
The food’s in the fridge, book on the shelf,
And damn do I feel my best.
I’m sitting in my chair, watching the door,
Waiting for the knock to come,
But the longer I waited, it came no more.
I can’t believe what I have not done.
I was planning to open it
